Once I set myself the goal of finding all the places where women hold the upper hand. What began as a slightly crazy idea soon turned into a lifelong obsession.
Since 2005, when I persuaded my partner Simon to join me, we’ve been mapping communities where women play a leading role in family and/or society. Our daughter Mirabel has now joined the adventure too.
This is really a continuation of our Where Women Rule project. Over time, we’ve been building an anthology of “Matricultures” — societies with matriarchal traits — from matriliny (where names and inheritance follow the mother’s line), to matrifocality (where mums run the show at home), and matrilocality (where husbands come to live with their wives).
